Football Season? No problem, I got you covered. My husband’s friends don’t even know this is a cottage cheese dip recipe and usually clear the dip OUT on game day.
You’ll want to add this to your list of healthy appetizers.
Sure, you can always grab a premade taco dip from the store. But those dips are usually packed with a LOT of unnecessary preservatives we don’t need and a bunch of ingredients no one knows how to pronounce. No thank you.
So let’s talk about this secret weapon that’s key in this delicious taco dip recipe. COTTAGE CHEESE.
Alright, I’ll admit, it took me a while before I could hop on the cottage cheese bandwagon. I am a texture person all the way. Where’s all my texture people at?
It doesn’t phase me one bit in this recipe because its blended together and so smooth and creamy.
Why is cottage cheese so healthy?
This stuff is jammed packed with calcium, protein and SO many other nutrients.
It’s considered to be a fresh cheese and has mild taste, which makes it easy to throw it into recipes to give it a creamy texture you would otherwise get from something like sour cream or cream cheese.
A single low fat serving of this stuff is 14g of protein, 3g of carbs, and 1g of fat. Awesome macros, right? Cue the yummy recipe.
Why you’ll love this taco dip with cottage cheese recipe:
- Macro friendly dip
- High Protein Snack; Over 16g of protein per serving
- Ready in minutes, no baking required!!
- Use your favorite taco toppings and switch it up!
Simple ingredients you’ll need for taco dip with cottage cheese:
You can really use anything in this recipe, but the following ingredients below are my favorites and what I’m using for today’s recipe!
- 16oz Cottage Cheese; any low fat version will work
- Packet of taco seasoning
- Iceberg Lettuce
- Mild green chilis; drained (4oz can)
- Cherry Tomatoes; or any tomatoes sliced, diced, whatever you prefer 🙂
- Shredded Cheese; preferably Mexican or Monterey jack cheese but any cheese blend works
- 1 Green Onion; sliced
- Fresh Cilantro
How to make this easy taco dip with cottage cheese:
Step 1
Combine the cottage cheese and taco seasoning together in a food processor or blender to get it smooth and creamy.
Step 2
Grab a smaller casserole dish. Any will work, I just wouldn’t recommend using a large dish unless you are doubling the recipe.
Step 3
Start with layering the blended cottage cheese mixture on the bottom, then your iceberg lettuce, then chili peppers, shredded cheese, tomatoes, and top with green onions and fresh cilantro.
Note: I will sometimes do a quick rinse in my food processor and throw in the cilantro to shred it finely to sprinkle on top.
If you guys don’t have one, I would highly suggest grabbing one next time your on amazon. I use this thing ALL THE TIME. Here’s the one I use and LOVE linked right here.
Step 4
Serve with your favorite tortilla corn chips, pita chips or sliced bell peppers, DIP and ENJOY!!!
Some notes and other options for your taco dip:
Iceberg Lettuce
I recommend iceberg lettuce versus romaine for this recipe for the crunch factor.
I LOVE romaine, but I don’t think it goes well in a dip like this one. You can buy iceberg lettuce and shred yourself, or buy the pre-shredded kind.
Other options to customize your dip
Add some of these yummy options in your taco dip, all would be great additions.
- Avocados
- Black Olives
- Salsa
- Jalapenos
- Black beans
- Corn
- Red onion
There are SO many different alternatives, get crazy!
How to store your cottage cheese taco dip:
This taco dip is served cold. If you make the dip in a dish that comes with a lid, you can place the lid over the dish and store as is in the refrigerator. Here is a great one that I use often! You can store this in any airtight container.
Cottage Cheese can tend to have a small amount of excess liquid. Be sure to stir dip well before serving the leftovers.
Because the lettuce may lose some of the crunch the next day, I will usually add some fresh lettuce back in before eating the leftovers and it tastes the same as the day you made it!
This will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.
