I was born right outside of Philly and have lived close to Philly for a long time. So when I say my family and I are diehard Philadelphia fans, we truly are.

There is nothing more delicious than biting into a cheesesteak with the cheese sauce dripping out of it walking down the beautiful streets of Philly going to an eagles game.

BUT…..those calories on those delicious and tasty cheesesteaks? Yikes.

I decided I was going to create my own version so I can still enjoy one of my favorites without sacrificing my health goals.

Oh hey chicken Philly cheesesteak recipe! A great alternative with tender and juicy chicken, with veggies and melted creamy cheese…..is your mouth watering yet?

Now, some Philadelphians say peppers do not belong on a traditional cheesesteak. That is truly debatable depending on which Philadelphian you talk to.

This recipe, we are going to load it up with all the good stuff and throw it on a soft hoagie rolls or bun, wrap, salad, or eat as is and enjoy it guilt free.

I didn’t even mention the BEST part. This recipe is extremely macro friendly, that if you want to enjoy it as a true cheesesteak, go ahead, throw it on that sub roll.

I personally love an amoroso roll. The cheesesteak filling is so low in carbs and fats, that you can enjoy it as a real cheesesteak and enjoy every last crumb.

  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Paprika
  • Olive oil

  • Provolone cheese (sliced or shredded)

All of the ingredients you'll need to make these cheesesteaks.

How to make a healthy Philly chicken cheesesteak skillet:

Step 1

Prep the meat and veggies. With a sharp knife, trim off any excess fat on your chicken breast and slice into thin slices. The thinness of the chicken strips is really based upon your personal preference.

Slice the bell pepper and yellow onion into strips.

Step 2

Heat up half of the olive oil in a large skillet or pan and add in the bell pepper and yellow onion. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for a few minutes until tender on medium-high heat.

Once the peppers and onions have cooked to your preference, remove from pan and set aside.

Step 3

Add the remaining olive oil in the pan and add in the chicken slices. Sprinkle in the garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and paprika so the chicken is coated evenly. Continue to cook on medium-high heat for about 5-8 minutes.

The length of cooking depends on the amount of chicken you have and the thickness. Cook until you have fully cooked and tender chicken.

Optional: Drain any additional juice from the pan from the chicken.

Step 4

Turn the heat to medium-low. Add back in the peppers and onions and mix everything together. Add in the provolone cheese and continue mixing until cheese has melted.

To speed up the process, cover the skillet or pan with a lid or aluminum foil until you have melted cheese.

Step 5

Serve on your favorite bun, wrap, salad, or whatever you prefer and ENJOY!!

Additional Notes, Tips and Tricks for these delicious chicken cheesesteaks:

Can I use frozen peppers and onions to save time?

Yes! You 10000% can use frozen peppers and onions, and I have done this many of times if I don’t have any fresh peppers or onions on hand.

Can I use beef instead of chicken?

You most DEFINITELY can use beef instead of chicken and that right there friends, will give you a true cheesesteak option.

I opt for chicken for a healthier version because its lower in fat and more macro friendly, but there are some great lean options for beef if you prefer that route.

Ways to eat this chicken cheesesteak skillet:

You can enjoy this recipe the traditional way and enjoy it on a bun. If your looking for healthier low-carb options, try opting for a macro friendly wrap. My go to wraps are mission protein tortillas.

You can also put the cheesesteak filling into peppers and cook in the oven for a delicious low carb meal option as well. And last but not least, enjoy this delicious stuff right out of the pan as is!!

You can even turn this Philly chicken cheesesteak into a California style cheesesteak and add on some lettuce and tomatoes for the perfect sandwich.

That is actually my favorite way as you can see in the pictures. I think it gives a nice balance of flavors and its a great way to get additional veggies in.

I love turning this healthy philly chicken cheesesteak into a california style sandwich by adding some yummy veggies!

Sauce options for chicken Philly cheese steak:

I don’t know about you, but I am a sauce queen. For this recipe, you really don’t need any sauce, but if you’re like me, you like the added juiciness sauce gives ya.

Now my kids love smothering theirs in ketchup, but you can also do marinara sauce and my personal favorite…..RANCH.

Here is a very low calorie ranch dressing recipe right here that you can whip together in less than 5 minutes and keep on hand.

Cheese options:

Provolone cheese is my favorite choice, but go ahead and use any cheese option for this recipe. Another great choice is white American cheese, and of course, the amount of cheese you use is totally up to you.

Then last but not least, swap out that provolone cheese for some good ol’ Philadelphia style cheesesteak and drizzle it with some cheez whiz. Now I don’t need to tell you the calorie difference, but hey, sometimes ya gotta indulge, right?

And this eagles fan just has to throw it in here…….GO BIRDS!

A true philadelphia lovin family, GO EAGLES!

How to store your healthy Philly chicken cheesesteaks:

Now I doubt you will have leftover chicken Philly cheesesteak, BUT if you do, you can store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and simply reheat in the microwave when ready to eat.

The same method can be done if you are meal prepping, just throw this mixture in meal prep bowls. Here are the ones I use right here
